Thanks to Todd Gould (of Loren Data – see the article about his newest ECGridOS concepts), I spent the better part of a day at recent ASC X-12 trimester meeting (September, 2009) and got to talk with some industry heavy hitters about the state of EDI and how it can continue to soldier on into the future.  EDI has been around for thirty years, and has some serious potential for the future –as it has for a lot of years.

One of the things I discussed with Todd (and others) is the cost issues involved.  We discussed how we can “expand” EDI … to the masses.  My suggestions were to expand the concepts of EDI to “the every-man”…  Make it more affordable, more available and far less complex and confusing then it appears to be.  But one of the things that still holds court for EDI from my perspective, is the cost issues.  So many people think EDI is “expensive” – but in a lot of ways, it’s not.

Retailers Are Beginning to Investigate the Promise of Cloud Computing

At a recent IDC conference on cloud computing, we were surprised at how well the retail industry was represented among the attendees.  These attendees told us that their motives were investigative – they were there to learn, not to start buying.  They also told us that their interest was in "private clouds" – using the technologies behind utility computing and public cloud offerings to operate their own cloud for provisioning, running, and managing their corporate applications.

HP announced on August 24th the release of GS1 Canada Product Recall service.

Initially focused on enabling faster, more efficient and less costly product recalls for all supply chain partners in the Canadian food industry - and I truly mean ALL parties from retailers to their suppliers - the initiative compliant with GS1 supply chain standards aims at improving the consumer experience in an economically sustainable fashion.

The other day I was on an EDI forum and reading one e-mail after another where a poor kid salesman, selling his EDI system was getting bashed repeatedly.  Mentally he must have looked like Jodie Foster in the Accused or close to it.  He, that is, the company he works for offers some FREE services (It was DI-international) and has a promotion touting exactly that.  Others on the forum were, to say the least skeptical.
