Integrating Supply Chain Components with Microsoft Dynamics GP

Maximizing the labor-saving and accuracy-improving benefits of Microsoft Dynamics GP often requires paying attention elsewhere – specifically to the data streams that drive and are driven by ERP.  After all, the best human interface is a poor substitute for not needing one. Good automated links amplify the power of individual systems and may be the keys to actually realizing expected returns on investment.

Payment systems, EDI, payroll and warehouse management are typical examples of functions that have always been connected. Once you have made the choice to remove fingertips and keystrokes from joining those processes, the next decision is how best to do so. Microsoft Dynamics GP offers more than one option, and your own IT resources as well as vendors with related software and services will differ in approach.

Is Integration Becoming an Asset for the Cloud?

Integration may be shifting from a liability to a non-issue and possibly even an asset for SaaS and cloud computing.

Two things make me think this. First, it seems some companies are moving their EDI (electronic data interchange) services to the cloud, which means they can finally eliminate those expensive, hosted value-added networks.

EDI is a pre-Internet standard for electronic commerce, commonly used by banks and ATMs. We're talking old-school, legacy technology dating back to the '60s and '70s here.

This topic was added to our calendar when a reader sent us an e-mail which reads: “Hi, we have a homemade application and our invoice info is generated thru a sql query and saved as a CSV file.  How can I import the CSV file in Peachtree…?”  I don’t have any techies to research this or figure out ‘how to’ anymore so I went into my rolodex and started calling and e-mailing people questions about Peachtree and how to get data into or out of it.

RFID - Something Retailers are Looking at...

Retail spending is still not what it could be…  Yes, consumers are spending, but taking more time to make decisions and shopping more to find better deals.  This means Retailers have to work harder to a.) Attract/keep customers and b.) Maintain margin.  There are many ways this could be achieved: including RFID (Radio Frequency Identification).  For many in the industry, maintaining margin means finding efficiencies everywhere and anywhere.  Attracting new and existing customers is another issue – and very much related depending on the process efficiencies Retailers look to for relief.

The inherent nature of today’s supply chain requires a rethinking of the supporting technical architecture

In a whitepaper entitled ‘One-to-Many – Establishing a common platform to address multiple supply chain applications’  Trevor Miles writes about multi-enterprise supply chains.

Outsourcing has created new challenges. One of these is visibility and retaining accountability when companies do not have access to the right information. As Trevor states in his paper, much of the data required to make informed decisions is residing in Excel spreadsheets.

Companies that do not outsource are also faced with distributed supply chains where inventory may be managed by a 3rd party or product is manufactured in different locations of the organization without the ability to synchronize demand and supply across multiple systems.
